Grateful for Maine: Why We Work to Defend Our Coast

In our work at PMFHF, we see a lot of ugly things happening in our ocean - the real environmental and economic impacts of industrial-scale aquaculture are not easy to look at. But with Thanksgiving ahead, we have been reflecting on the past year, and we’re realizing that we have a lot to be grateful for. All of our supporters, donors, volunteers, and partners who make our work possible. The incredible fishermen and women of Maine who share their lived experience with us so that we can understand the nuances of their industry. And of course, our beautiful coastline that brings joy to so many people.

It’s this gratitude for Maine that is at the heart of our work. It’s why we will not stop fighting to defend our beautiful state and all of the people who call it home. So far, 2023 has been a productive year for all of us here at PMFHF:

  • We have expanded our work with communities by helping them build coalitions of people and work to create their own aquaculture ordinances so they won’t fall prey to industrial scale aquaculture.

  • We have expanded our partnerships with the Global Salmon Resistance Foundation, an organization that  works on the front lines globally to stop industrial scale aquaculture salmon pens.

  • We have highlighted what is happening in Brunswick and helped community members and marine harvesters coalesce as we seek answers about how big is too big for aquaculture leases of any species. We have forced the question around testing next to a 35 acre aquaculture lease as a possible point source of pollution for the significant algae blooms that are occurring.

  • We put our best foot forward testifying in support of a small owner operator aquaculturist who wants to make a living with an appropriately located and scaled aquaculture lease.

  • We had our first success at the legislature with the passage of LD 508 which asks for a study group around the future of the coast of Maine.

Continuing on those efforts, we’re excited to announce the launch of a giving campaign, with a focus on the beauty of our state that we are so passionately fighting to protect. We hope you’ll enjoy the images and videos that we will share between now and November 28, Giving Tuesday. And we hope that in looking at these images, you remember that we have a lot to lose in this fight, and that you’ll take action to join in our cause - whether that means donating, subscribing to our newsletter, or sharing our website and social posts with a friend.

Thank you for the continued support.
