Lobstermen in Maine have been hit hard by Covid-19. A concert on the ocean this weekend is planned to help.

Protect Maine’s Fishing Heritage Foundation (PMFHF) is holding a live concert on the ocean to raise money for Maine lobstermen on Sunday, August 02. The Covid relief fundraiser will be matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000 by the foundation.

We wanted to share a couple of pieces of information with you.

Dealing with the coronavirus has significantly impacted the fishing industry. We wanted to give you some resources that might help as you sort through your finances and the relief you are eligible to receive. It looks like there are some significant resources that are coming to the fishing community in terms of the Cares Act which will provide economic resources including to those who are self-employed.

We are hoping you are all being careful and taking the necessary precautions to protect yourselves, your families and community. Protect Maine’s Fishing Heritage (PMFH) is releasing a video involving fishermen who believe that the rules and regulations around aquaculture leases need to be changed.

At a recent aquaculture lease hearing in Freeport, local clammer Dale Sawyer spoke about how a proposed lease threatens the livelihood of traditional fisheries in the area.

We begin this year with more work ahead of us but with a growing coalition!

Our members have been active in stating their opinions in newspapers around Maine.

As a fisherman, when you apply for a license, you are making a commitment. That license stays with you and stays with your boat. You can’t transfer it to anyone else or any other vessel. You invest your training and your equipment in that fishery, knowing that it is something you are going to be doing for the long-term in order to make it worthwhile. It also means that you are invested in the health of the resources that provide your livelihood. None of this is true for the aquaculture industry as it is currently set up.
